Silky  Usucha (Thin Matcha)

Usucha, or thin matcha, is light, frothy, and delicate—a true ritual in a cup. Here’s how to make it perfectly.

1. Use Premium Matcha

Choose ceremonial-grade matcha for the sweetest, most vibrant flavor.

2. Pick the Right Whisk & Bowl

  • Shin chasen (真茶筅) for smooth microfoam

  • Ceramic bowl retains heat better than glass

3. Whisk with Your Wrist

Use a gentle zig-zag (“M” or “W”) motion. Avoid using your whole arm—wrist action gives a fine, even froth.

4. Make a Paste First

Mix matcha with a small amount of hot water before full whisking to prevent clumps.

5. Try the 40:20:10 Method

  • 30s: Vigorous whisking

  • 20s: Medium-speed for microfoam

  • 10s: Light whisking to smooth

Enjoy!

A perfectly whisked usucha has creamy microfoam and a delicate flavor—sip slowly and savor the ritual.
